4-H clover 4-H Horse Project

What you'll do

Even if you don't own a horse, you can take part in a range of activities. Your horse, if you have one, can be leased or owned.

  • Contests and events to show and ride your horse
  • Quiz bowls and judging teams
  • Hippology - the study of horse science
  • Roping, goat tying and cattle sorting
  • Training an untrained horse through a five-step process

What you'll learn

Learn how to care for horses and you will also gain valuable life skills!

  • Ethics, sportsmanship and responsibility
  • Public speaking and leadership skills

Levels of learning

Fairs & exhibits

You may choose to compete in the horse project at your county fair. If you do well, you may win a trip to the Minnesota 4-H State Horse Show. You can choose to compete at the Minnesota State Fair (in another category, such as veterinary science) with a horse-related exhibit.
