Gate admission
Complimentary gate admission tickets are issued for 4-H state fair participants who have registered and paid their program fee. Only registered participants are entitled to these tickets.
If you are staying somewhere other than on the fairgrounds (like Bailey Hall, etc.) you will need a gate ticket for each day. A hand stamp (available at each gate) is required if you plan to leave and re-enter the fairgrounds on the same day.
Regular gate admission tickets can be purchased online, by mail or in person. The Minnesota State Fair does offer discount tickets purchased in advance of the fair.
If you would like additional information, feel free to call the fair general information number at 651-288-4400 or visit the Minnesota State Fair website.
Livestock exhibitors arriving on Wednesday and staying overnight will not receive a complimentary gate admission ticket for Wednesday because gate admission tickets are not needed until Thursday.
Tickets for exhibitors staying in Bailey Hall
If you are assigned to stay in Bailey Hall (Twin Cities campus in St. Paul) during livestock encampment, the county chaperones will pick up the complimentary gate admission tickets for the entire county at the 4-H dorm desk each night.
Tickets for exhibitors staying off-grounds
4-H’ers that are staying off-grounds during livestock encampment will receive a complimentary gate admission ticket for each night they are staying off-grounds.
These additional complimentary gate admission tickets are only available to livestock exhibitors during livestock encampment and are not for general encampment or llama-alpaca youth that choose to stay off-grounds.
General and llama-alpaca encampment participants are given one complimentary gate admission ticket per person, per encampment for admission on the first day.
If you choose to stay off-grounds and have to come more than one day, you will need to purchase additional gate admission tickets.
Gate 14 (located at Canfield St. and Como Ave.) is open 24 hours a day. You will be able to enter the fairgrounds at any time to tend to your livestock and prepare for your shows.
Gate 5 (located on Snelling Ave.) and Gate 16 (located at the Transit Hub), are open for exhibitors at 5:30 a.m. All other walk-through gates are open for exhibitors at 6 a.m.
For non-exhibitors, gate and ticket sale hours are:

- Fairgrounds hours: 7 a.m. – 11 p.m. (9 p.m. on Labor Day)
Minnesota State Fair guests, including 4-H exhibitors, are required to pass through metal detectors at the entry gates. Bags, purses, coolers and packages will be subject to search at each of the entrances.
Prohibited items include:
- Weapons or objects that appear to be weapons.
- Fireworks or other explosive and flammable objects.
- Alcoholic beverages or any illegal substance.
- Drones or any remote-controlled toys.
- Bikes, skateboards, skates and hoverboards.
Other items may be refused at the discretion of state fair management or law enforcement. Learn more about gate guidelines.
Parking and lodging
Overnight parking during the fair
Overnight parking will be made available on a first-come-first-serve basis in the Continuing Education Conference Center lot and the Water Tower Lot (both located on the Twin Cities campus in St. Paul) during livestock encampment. These are non-staffed lots. The closest entrance onto the grounds from the lots is to the east of the Continuing Education Conference Center lot or the west entrance by Dan Patch Ave.
Please note that county/tribal communities are only allowed two overnight parking passes per encampment. The passes cost $12 per night. Talk with your local 4-H staff if overnight parking is needed. You may need to coordinate parking/carpooling.
Accessible parking
Parking spaces designated for vehicles with a valid disabled persons parking identification placard are located in many Minnesota State Fair lots on a first-come basis. See a state fair map for locations.
Housing assignments
For an additional fee, you may choose 4-H lodging when registering for the Minnesota State Fair. Depending on your encampment, you will be assigned one of the following dorms: Bailey Hall (Twin Cities campus in St. Paul), the 4-H Building (fairgrounds), the Cattle Barn (fairgrounds) or the Swine Barn (fairgrounds).
If you are participating in the general livestock judging contest, you can stay in the 4-H Building on Tuesday night.

All counties are required to provide 4-H’ers to help with kitchen duty (KP duty) during the general encampment. Chaperones are also needed for KP duty during livestock encampment. These volunteers are vital in reducing cafeteria costs and keeping food costs low, and they also assist in faster, more efficient service.
Chaperones will be recruiting 4-H members to help, so let your chaperone know if you would be interested in volunteering with KP Duty.
New this year: KP duty assignments will be available after final registration.

Health care, medications and safety
All youth 4-H state fair participants must review and update (or have staff update) their health and emergency contact information in 4-H Online as soon as possible after accepting a state fair trip.
Health information for adult volunteers is required for individuals who travel out of county/tribal communities as a Minnesota 4-H volunteer.
This information should be entered directly into the volunteer profile in 4-H Online. If accessing 4-H Online is not an option, the health information page of the Minnesota 4-H volunteer re-enrollment form should be used.
Prescription medication can be very dangerous if administered inappropriately. The medication policy and procedures are designed to help keep all youth safe.
The policy and procedures apply to all youth (participants or employees) age 17 and under who either stay overnight in 4-H provided sleeping quarters or require medication at a daytime program where a parent/guardian is not present.
If you become sick prior to the start of your encampment, please stay home. For those exhibiting general projects, a virtual judging option is available.
4-H nurse on duty
A registered nurse is on-site 24 hours a day. Dormitory staff also has access to an emergency vehicle 24 hours a day. The nurse's office is located on the third floor of the 4-H Building and in a pod behind the Coliseum during the daytime hours of the livestock encampment. The nurse is available for registered participants and chaperones only. All others must be referred to the Minnesota State Fair First Aid Station, located next to the 4-H Building.
If you get sick when you're at the fair, see the nurse. If you have diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, fever, cough or sore throat or red/itchy eyes, the nurse may test you for COVID-19 or influenza and isolate you until your test results come back. If you have a positive test, parents or guardians will be called to pick you up.
If an accident or illness occurs, you should be brought to the nurse immediately. The nurse on duty will determine whether to refer you for further treatment. During this assessment, every attempt will be made to reach your parent or guardian or alternative emergency contact. Should a life-threatening emergency occur, emergency help will be sought immediately. The nurse will contact the hospital directly.
It is important that any illnesses or injury that occurs during a 4-H experience at the Minnesota State Fair be documented by the 4-H nurse on duty. This will serve as evidence later if 4-H accident insurance is needed. You are responsible for notifying the nurse of the illness or injury.
Staying healthy when working with livestock
If you are working with livestock and poultry that naturally have germs that can make people sick, you could get a diarrheal illness or a viral infection, like influenza, from the animals.
To stay healthy, wash your hands with soap and water before eating and drinking and avoid eating and drinking in the animal areas. If you must eat or drink while working with your animals, be sure to wash your hands with soap and water prior.
Wear dedicated clothes and barn boots or shoes around the animals or in the animal areas. Once you return to the dormitory or your accommodations, shower and change clothes. Keep your clean and dirty clothes separate.
The health and safety of everyone involved in Minnesota 4-H is our highest priority. We work very closely with the Minnesota State Fair and the University of Minnesota to ensure that 4-H'ers are safe when participating in our showcase events.
To learn more about our preparation for Minnesota State Fair, please review our safety plan. You can do your part by traveling in groups, checking in with your chaperone, being aware of your surroundings and leaving valuable items at home.
Other things to keep in mind:
- Watch for emergency notifications. If an emergency situation arises in the area, local law enforcement may issue phone alerts.
- Pay attention to the weather. Listen for tornado sirens and review the Minnesota State Fair severe weather shelter map.
- Sometimes cell service can be spotty due to the large number of people on the fairgrounds. In those instances, find a severe weather shelter map on the Minnesota 4-H app or near building entrances, ask Minnesota State Fair and emergency personnel for directions or help, or return to the designated location (if able to do so safely).
Policies
The 4-H Building on the fairgrounds is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Only 4-H’ers staying in the dorm, adult chaperones, Extension staff and 4-H state fair staff are allowed in the building before and after these hours.
You are required to have your Minnesota State Fair 4-H button to get in and out of the building. The superintendent's office opens at approximately 7 a.m. and closes at approximately 10 p.m. each day. All 4-H participants will follow all established rules, including curfew at 11 p.m.
Doors to the main exhibit hall (first floor) will open at 8 a.m. for 4-H’ers with morning judging, judges attending orientation and presenters preparing for early public presentations. For safety and security reasons, you must wear a 4-H button at all times. Identification may be required at the door in order to gain entrance to the building so be sure to wear your 4-H button and/or carry some form of identification at all times.
Participants must understand appropriate cell phone and other device use. There are certain times when these devices should not be used, such as:
- During any judging activity. Participants need to respect other 4-H’ers by turning off all cell phones to avoid disturbance. It will also be recommended to the parents and general public to avoid those disturbances.
- In the dorm after lights out hours. This includes talking on the phone, text messaging, social media and games.
- During any shows or presentations by 4-H’ers or any other group. Cell phones should be off or on silent to avoid disturbance. Use common courtesy.
Code of conduct
Please review the Minnesota 4-H Code of Conduct.
The code of conduct includes a list of behavior standards and rules governing participation in 4-H events, how those standards and rules apply at the Minnesota State Fair and potential consequences for any violation.
Dress code
All youth are expected to follow the dress code as described in the code of conduct:
- Please dress appropriately.
- For your judging, wear nice clothes (appropriate length shorts, shirts – no tank tops, strapless tops or hats) that are clean and free of logos.
- Livestock exhibitors must wear their show shirts for judging.
Remember, this is an interview and a presentation. You are a representative of your county/tribal community 4-H program.
General exhibits entry and judging
All exhibits (except vegetables, potatoes, fruits, flowers, plants and perishable foods) will be displayed during the entire duration of the Minnesota State Fair.
How to prepare your exhibit for transport to the state fair
Prepare your exhibit before you bring it to your local Extension office for 4-H staff to transport it to the Minnesota State Fair.
All exhibits need to be packed and labeled appropriately and then brought to your local Extension office. For example, small exhibits should be in boxes, posters should be in large garbage bags, photos in zipper storage bags, clothes in garment bags, etc.
Since staff will be delivering these projects to the Minnesota State Fair for you, it is important that they are packaged appropriately so they do not get damaged.
Local staff do not have packing supplies available for you – you must bring them yourself. If your project is not packed and labeled appropriately, they will ask you to take it home and complete it before they will accept it.
Make sure the packaging and all pieces of your exhibit are labeled with all of the following information (in case pieces get separated):
- Name and grade
- County/tribal community name
- Project area
- Number “x” of “y” pieces (if the item has multiple parts)
Again, if there are multiple pieces in your exhibit, each piece has to have the above information on it, and pieces should be labeled as follows: 1 of 4, 2 of 4, 3 of 4, etc. As stated above, these exhibits will be delivered to and from the Minnesota State Fair for you.
Talk to your local Extension staff about transporting oversized exhibits.
Transporting the exhibit on your own prior to the state fair
Local Extension staff will transport exhibits on your behalf unless:
- You plan to transport your exhibit yourself.
- Your exhibit is too large (shop projects, tractors, bikes, etc.)
- Your exhibit is too heavy (over 10-15 lbs.).
In these cases, you will be responsible for bringing the exhibit directly to the 4-H Building on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds during your county's assigned project check-in date and time. Please check with staff to verify the date and time.
All exhibits must be accounted for before staff go to the state fair. If you will be transporting your exhibit on your own, you must inform local Extension staff. All exhibits must be labeled as directed.
Taking the exhibit with you during the encampment or judging day
The following exhibits should be brought with you at the beginning of your encampment or on judging day and then returned home with you at the end of your encampment or judging day:
- Fashion revue (accessories, shoes)
- Food revue (supplies and food)
- Foods (perishable foods)
- Food prep items
- Fruit (fresh fruit)
- Flower/indoor gardening (live plants)
- Vegetable gardening (fresh vegetables)
- Demonstration/public presentation supplies
- Potatoes
- Arts-In and Share the Fun supplies/props
Exhibit Judging
Exhibit judging at the state fair consists of a group judging experience where you share your project with the judge and other 4-H’ers in a group setting.
Exhibitors please:
- Take note of your judging times and allow yourself plenty of time.
- Plan to be available during the duration of your judging time slot.
- Read the 4-H state fair general premium book carefully for general regulations and project-specific activities and requirements.
Orientation for general projects will take place on the second-floor stage prior to each judging session.
If staff transported exhibits to the state fair
After the state fair, all exhibits will be picked up and returned to the local Extension office by staff. Any exhibits left at the local Extension office will be discarded or donated.
If you transported your exhibit to the state fair
You are responsible for picking up your exhibit at the 4-H Building during the following times:
- Monday, Sept. 2, 8-10 p.m.
- Tuesday, Sept. 3, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
- Wednesday, Sept. 4, 8 a.m.-noon
Important to note
Please take into consideration that all exhibits at the state fair are entered and displayed at the risk of the exhibitor. If your exhibit is of great sentimental and/or monetary value, you should carefully consider whether it should be exposed to the hazards of the fair.
No gas is allowed in the 4-H Building and must be removed from projects.
Due to the space constraints in the 4-H Building, some larger exhibits (e.g., lawnmowers, snowmobiles, cars, tractors, etc.) may be located outside on the north end of the 4-H Building.
4-H state virtual judging will be offered for general projects only.
If you are choosing to submit your general projects virtually, your projects are on display at the state fair, and you participate in a live virtual judging session with a judge.
Entering virtual exhibits
To participate in virtual judging, you must:
- Complete the Qualtrics entry form prior to Aug. 15 at 4 p.m.
- Late fairs ending after Aug. 15, must submit forms by Aug. 19 at 4 p.m.
- In the form, you will need to upload your video (demo, performing arts, fashion revue) and photos of your exhibit.
- Work with local staff to determine when projects need to be dropped off.
Virtual conference judging
4-H’ers who submit virtual exhibits are encouraged to participate in conference judging on Zoom. This gives you the chance to speak to the judge about their project.
Live virtual judging will take place on the following dates and times:
- Aug. 22, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. or 2-7 p.m.
- Aug. 28, 2-8 p.m.
Conference judging times will be emailed to the participants along with a Zoom link.
