Mental health: U of M Extension shares stories and resources

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month and Extension has something for everyone. Extension courses, articles and podcasts provide guidance and resources to help you all year long.

The Moos Room Podcast

The Moos Room Podcast brings us an episode on a mental health topic each May, as well as during other times. This year, it is episode 170 on burnout, and what to do if you are already there. Also, the May 2022 episode about expectations included discussions about being honest with yourself, and then dispelled some myths about meditation. New episodes arrive nearly every week.

'Focused wandering' cultivates mindfulness

As we juggle the demands of jobs, family and other commitments, many of us have limited opportunities to slow down and connect with nature. Phenology is the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena. Extension's natural resources team felt inspired to make this spring into a phenology photo celebration, using the iNaturalist app and social media sharing for all.

Cultivating recovery and healing through community

Extension's Community-based Opioid Prevention and Education (COPE) project supports recovery and healing by harnessing community strengths and building recovery capital. Community changemakers in Itasca, Pine and St. Louis counties are making a real difference in the lives of those recovering and healing from substance use disorder.

Postpartum support: The first 40 days

There is a lot to learn about transitioning to parenthood.

Created in collaboration with Somali parents and caregivers, the 40-Day Project promotes mental wellness and self-care for Somali birthing people during the first five weeks after birth.
