Ask Extension: Where can I buy native plants?

Native plants are a great addition to any landscape. They are adaptable, provide a wide diversity of color, bloom time, form and texture. And they benefit important pollinators and other insects and animals.

As in all plant selection, choose plants that will thrive, not just survive. Like all plants, native plants have specific growing requirements - sun or shade, moist or dry soil, etc. Select those plants with growing requirements that match your growing conditions. Video: Right Plant, Right Place!

Native plant growers can be found across Minnesota. You can order plants from them online and have them shipped to you. You can also find them at local farmers’ markets. Our Extension webpage Native Plants will get you started, but also visit the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources webpage on Landscaping with Native Plants

Minnesota Grown also has lists of native plant suppliers. Visit the Minnesota Grown directory and use the Search box.

See Flowers for pollinators for more resources on plants that attract bees and butterflies.
