Biosecure entry education trailer

Quick facts

  • The biosecure entry education trailer, or BEET, is a teaching tool to demonstrate the Danish entry system for on-farm biosecurity.
  • The BEET trailer is mobile and available for training purposes on-site, statewide.
  • Customizable biosecurity education for any livestock species

You can learn how to make your farm more biosecure

BEET demonstrates how animal care takers, exhibitors and industry professionals can improve biosecurity. Using the trailer, people can assess and practice their biosecurity plans for entry into biosecure animal barns.

BEET’s primary purpose:

  • The educational program supports multiple ways to carry out enhanced biosecurity plans.
  • Owners and managers who need to decide which practices fit their management needs.
  • Employees need training to know how to properly carry out Danish entry plans.

Managers responsible for making biosecurity plans can use the trailer to decide their plans for entry into poultry barns based on Danish entry concepts. Employees and visitors expected to carry out biosecurity procedures can use the trailer to practice company plans and navigate any unusual situations that may come up.

The BEET trailer is mobile and available for training purposes on-site or off-site, statewide.

What is the Danish entry system?

Biosecure entries based on Danish entry concepts are designed to make it easier for people to remove potentially contaminated outside clothing, boots and items and put on barn-specific clothing and boots and use barn-specific items. The clothing exchange and hand washing are designed to prevent disease transfer as people cross a Line of Separation (LOS) from outside to inside a biosecure barn. A LOS is a functional line that divides a dirty space from a clean space that houses animals. Thus, a line of separation is key to no-shower biosecure entries.

The keys to the Danish entry system are:

  • A biosecure entrance to the farm.
  • The entrance area has separate clean and dirty areas (line of separation).
  • Upon entry in the “dirty” area:
    • People remove their outer clothing and footwear.
    • Wash and disinfect hands.
    • Move to a clean area where clean protective clothing, such as boots and coveralls, are provided (boots should be put on before coveralls).
  • People complete the protocol in reverse when exiting the building.
The biosecure entry education trailer has both a two-zone and three-zone entry.
BEET has distinct clean and dirty areas.

BEET Features

The trailer offers numerous structural items and hard goods which allows each training to be tailored to the needs of the farm or production system. Features of trailer include:

  1. Three exterior doors
  2. Disinfectant pan
  3. Outside farm specific clothes storage
  4. Outside farm specific boot storage
  5. Chair or bench with hand sanitizer
  6. Clean boot storage bin
  7. Log book
  8. Barn specific coverall storage
  9. Hand washing station (2)
  10. Grey area shoe storage
  11. Barn specific boot washing station
  12. Optional plastic boot supply
  13. Trash bin

Using the biosecure entry education trailer

BEET simulates how to create a line of separation for the two types of Danish entries. Educational programs are based on the idea that there are multiple biosecurity principles used to implement enhanced biosecurity. Through experiential learning, the trailer teaches Danish entry concepts for entering and exiting biosecure livestock facilities. The BEET has been used since 2016 for numerous audiences and adapted for each. Audiences include:

  • Farm owners
  • Farm site managers
  • Animal caretakers
  • Production system administrative support
  • Truck drivers
  • Contract labor
  • Construction
  • Youth
  • Veterinary students
  • International visitors

Length of the program will depend on the goals and expected size of a group. To schedule programming for your organization with BEET, please contact:
