Cooking Matters Minnesota courses
Cooking Matters specialized curricula cover practical nutrition information, hands-on food preparation, and food budgeting and shopping. All participants receive recipes and other educational materials from the lessons, and adult and teen participants take home a bag of groceries each week to practice what they've learned in class at home.

During a Cooking Matters at the Store tour, participants learn smart shopping skills.
Cooking Matters at the Store is a grocery store tour that helps Minnesota shoppers make smart food choices on a limited budget. This course is based on a growing need for families to learn how to make the best possible use of their resources.
How does Cooking Matters at the Store work?
This class meets one time for two hours in a local grocery store. It is designed to teach adults and is intended for those living on a budget (income guidelines apply).
Four research-based objectives are covered in every tour. Participants are expected to:
- Identify at least three economical ways of purchasing fruits and vegetables.
- Practice comparing unit prices.
- Practice comparing food labels.
- Practice identifying whole grains.
Cooking Matters at the Store was developed based on research showing that careful food shopping practices, such as price comparison and nutrition label use, are associated with measures of better dietary quality. The program aims to promote real changes to food shopping habits by creating a dynamic learning experience for participants.
Those who complete the tour and short survey receive:
- Wallet-size calculator.
- Reusable cloth shopping bag.
- Booklet with the information presented in the tour.
- Fifteen healthy recipes to try at home.
Materials are available in both English and Spanish.

Cooking Matters for Chefs and Kids!
This easy-to-use guide helps chefs and others provide hands-on instruction. It will help kids develop a love of cooking and the skills to make healthy food choices wherever they go. Within the guide you will find a variety of resources to help you engage kids including:

Exploring Food Together
In this toolkit, you will find simple activities for adults who work with young children. Learn about new foods and start building the skills to make healthy food choices.. It can be used in the classroom or in the home.

Cooking Matters in your Food Pantry
This is a free guide to planning, organizing and leading food pantry demos in your community. The toolkit provides sample outlines of several nutrition education lessons and activities that can be used in the food pantry setting. It is easily customized to the amount of time you have available for your demonstration. It also contains a wide selection of handouts and recipes to use at your demo and to send home with clients.
