Are you a volunteer or staff member at a food shelf, food pantry, or another kind of emergency food program? Are you looking for techniques to "nudge" your clients into making healthier food choices? If so, then Nudging to health: Promoting healthy choices at your food shelf is for you!
Attend the class
Nudging to health: Promoting healthy choices at your food shelf is a class for food shelf volunteers and staff. The class instructs participants about basic nutrition principles and nudging techniques.
Participants who attend this class will:
-
Gain a better understanding of basic nutrition and what makes up healthy food choices. (We will use the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate guidelines.) The idea is to pass on this knowledge to food shelf clients.
-
Learn and practice simple nudging techniques. This will help you encourage clients at their food shelves to make healthier food choices.
This class is 90 minutes long. The session can be adapted to meet the learning needs of participants. It can also be adapted to fit the space and time needs of the partnering agency.
This program was developed by staff and educators with University of Minnesota Extension. Class content is based on the USDA’s MyPlate guidelines and the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement at Cornell University.
The class is taught at locations throughout Minnesota. SNAP-Ed educators partner with food shelves to offer the class. Each partnering program receive a complimentary copy of the
Food shelf resource book (PDF). This resource contains:
-
Easy-to-use food cards.
-
Food information sheets.
-
Produce freezing and storage guidelines.
-
Recipes using commonly found foods at a food shelf.
