4-H clover February 4-H state ambassador update

Hey!

Ebrahim M., Minnesota 4-H State Ambassador
Ebrahim M., Dakota County
Minnesota 4-H State Ambassador

My name is Ebrahim, and this is my first year on the Minnesota 4-H State Ambassador team.

The state ambassadors and TEEL leaders are excited to welcome 4-H'ers from across the state to our leadership workshops Building Leadership and Understanding (BLU) and Teens Engaged in Emerging Leadership (TEEL) this February.

Conserve energy in the winter service challenge

The 2023-2024 statewide service theme is "Conservation of Natural Resources." This encourages youth to think about their impact on the world around them.

In winter, a lot of energy is used to heat homes and businesses. Think about how much energy you use daily and learn how to lower it. Be aware of where you are using energy and how to use renewable energy.

While tracking your energy consumption, you can also track your plastic usage. Some plastics are not recyclable and will end up in landfills. These plastics then end up in the environment like lakes or forests.

To learn more and submit your acts of service, visit the Minnesota 4-H statewide service project page.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day reflection

Martin Luther King Jr. Day remembers Martin Luther King Jr., a visionary leader for civil rights and a fierce advocate for equality who was just that and more. In multiple nonviolent protests, he, along with the Civil Rights Movement, achieved the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act in 1965, which benefited minorities across America.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day reminds me of how far change can succeed. In a time of homogenous thoughts and ideas, Dr. King sought to find change in an unfair world. To what extent he was successful is in the hands of the people who pushed for it.

In my opinion, Dr. King's ideas were best expressed through his quote, "If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter."

Black History Month means more

Black History Month is an annual celebration that honors African Americans and their significant role in U.S. history. For most, it is an important stepping stone in giving thanks and remembrance to those who impacted U.S. history; however, for me, it is more.

For me, Black History Month is a special time when I add extra activities to my day to benefit the Black community. Whether that be reading books written by Black authors, learning more about my Black heritage or just trying something new that benefits my community.
