Mark and Cathy Baumann Family
Mark and Cathy started their ranch in 1985 while they were both working off the farm. The Baumanns established a working beef ranch that was carved out of the forest in northeast Minnesota while at the same time raising their family. Most of the Baumanns’ 1020 Ranch was converted from forest to productive fields and pasture providing forages for their livestock. The Baumanns have implemented rotational grazing and a watering system to supply the needs that allowed the family to expand their herd to four times its original size.
The 1020 Ranch is a beef cow-calf and backgrounding operation focused on producing high-quality, home-raised, reputation-feeder cattle. The family farms about 1,000 acres to produce all their forage needs in the form of hay and summer forages.
Mark and Cathy own and manage the 1020 Ranch and oversee its operation. Their daughter, Briana, and her husband, Dakota Johnson, take care of haying, livestock processing and backfill. The Baumanns’ son, Dillon, is also involved in haying, livestock processing and backfill.
Mark and Cathy are always willing to lend a hand with agriculture-related activities and educational opportunities. Their involvement in the local forage and grassland council provides valuable insights into what is needed for local farmers. They assist in topic selection for organizing both local winter workshops and summer field days.
The Baumanns have hosted a livestock handling field day as well as the 2022 Northeast Minnesota Forage and Grassland Council Summer Field Day; both events included over 100 participants. The Baumans are always willing to share their knowledge and the challenges they face so others can learn.
