Lyon County Farm Family

Buyck Farms

Jeff Buyck’s great-grandfather, Camiel, immigrated from Belgium and eventually settled to farm in the Garvin area of Lyon County in southwest Minnesota. Jeff’s grandfather, Charles “Bud” Buyck, farmed with his father, Camiel, and his brothers. After serving in WWII, Bud returned home and married Theresa Kosse and the couple had five children. Steve, their only son, took over the farm from Bud. Today, Steve and his wife, Carol, along with their only son, Jeff, and his wife, Jenna, farm together on some of the original land Camiel and Bud farmed.

The Buyck farm is home to corn and soybean production. Jeff and Jenna’s four children also each have a few animals of their own: dairy steers, sheep, pigs, chickens, horses, cats and one dog.

While Steve and Carol are still active in the farming operation, Jeff now handles the management decisions of the farm. Jenna handles the finances and fills in where needed, and their four children, Elizabeth, Clara, Evelyn and William, are learning the ropes by picking rock and learning how to drive the large equipment in the fields. They will be the fifth generation farming the original land.

The Buyck family is very supportive of 4-H, FFA, St. Mary’s Church and School, and the community. Steve and Carol are very active in their church when not working on the farm. Jeff is also employed with C&B Operations, involved with Knights of Columbus and was on the advisory board at South Dakota State University that created a precision agriculture degree. Jenna owns her own event planning business, serves as an assistant advisor for the Tracy Area FFA, and volunteers within the kids’ schools and activities. Elizabeth, Clara, Evelyn and William are active in numerous sports and in the Amiret Busy Bee 4-H Club and really enjoy showing their animals at the county fair.
