Peter and Scott Louwagie Farm
Oscar G. Louwagie emigrated from Belgium in 1948. After working for his uncle Hector Louwagie, Oscar went back to Belgium, married Alice Leeman, and returned to the U.S. to farm near Green Valley, MN. The couple moved to the current farm site in Lyon County in 1968, where the family maintained a diverse operation of dairy cows, chickens, corn, beans, and alfalfa. In 1993, Oscar and Alice's sons, Peter and Scott, began running the farm after the death of their father. The current farm includes a Grade A dairy of 90 cows and a finishing dairy beef operation. Corn, soybeans, and alfalfa are raised for crops.
Peter and Scott are the primary operators of the Louwagie farm. Peter's wife, Melissa, and Scott's wife, Janelle, are employed off the farm. Melissa is the CFO of Western Mental Health Center. Janelle is the pharmacy manager at Hy-Vee Pharmacy in Marshall.
Peter and Melissa have four children, Caitlin (husband Andrew), Zackery, Benjamin, and Cassie. All four children were involved in helping with the livestock and fieldwork while growing up. They were members of the Swan Lake Skippers 4-H Club and attended many Minnesota State Fairs showing their families dairy animals.
Caitlin is finishing graduate school and will obtain a Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies. Zackery graduated from college with a Precision Ag Degree and is employed at C&B Operations and also works on the farm during nights and weekends. Benjamin - Mechanical Engineering and Cassie - Music Education are currently attending college but have consistently come back to help on the farm on weekends and in the summer months.
Peter was a trustee at St. Clotilde Catholic until the church closed and continues to be on the church's cemetery board. Melissa was also involved with the church as a teacher and cantor and serves as the Vallers Township treasurer.
Scott and his wife, Janelle, have two children, Blake and Adeline. With their father's help, Adeline and Blake care for the calves.
Janelle is a co-leader of the Swan Lake Skippers 4-H club and a superintendent with the Lyon County 4-H dairy project. She also teaches CCD classes at St. Clotilde and St. Mary's Catholic Churches.
Blake and Adeline have been involved in the Swan Lake 4-H Club for many years. They both exhibit projects and their horses and dairy cattle at the county fair and Minnesota State Fair. Blake and Adeline are members of the American Guernsey Association and have exhibited at the World Dairy Expo. Both are very involved in various activities at school, and through their participation in national Pony of the Americas organizations, they have shown horses all over the Midwest.
