4-H clover Getting Started in a 4-H Livestock Project – Poultry

If you want to show poultry, you should get your ducks or chickens early. That way, they will be nice and big by the time you show them.  If you want to show an egg production pen it will help to get them early so they will be laying eggs for show, it takes about 5 months for them to start laying eggs. If you are showing a meat production pen you would want them to have a lot of meat on them and for them to be the right size and weight. You should also put your show ducks or chickens in a separate pen so they can be fed right. It is helpful to keep them separate, especially a few weeks before the show, so they can get nice and clean.  This also helps so they have nice feathers.
