What is a 4-H project?

We believe that youth learn best by doing. That’s why all 4-H’ers do hands-on projects in areas like science, health, agriculture, art and civic engagement. We give them a positive learning environment and guidance from adult mentors. Kids can concentrate on one project area or they can try as many as they like. Take a look at the idea book, exhibitor guide, or premium book to get some ideas and learn more. If your area Cloverbud who has finished kindergarten through 2nd grade, check out this guide just for you.

What is a fair exhibit?

A 4-H exhibit is something that 4-H’ers can make and show at the fair or other showcase event to demonstrate what they have learned in the project area. Examples include: a plate of cookies they have baked, a desk they refinished, a LEGO rocket they built, a chicken they raised, a picture they painted, and much more.

At the county fair, a 4-H’er explain their projects to a 4-H judge who asks questions about their learning and awards a placing based on how well they explain what they learned. 4-H’ers grades 6 and above who place high enough at the county fair may have the opportunity to take their exhibit to the Minnesota State Fair.

If you have any questions at any time, please feel free to contact the Extension Office 218-745-5232 or email Alysa at hauge450@umn.edu, we are here to help.
