Anoka County 4-H Fashion Revue

Cloverbuds and grades 3-5 

A special invitation is given to you to participate in Fashion Revue.  Remember, you may participate by carrying an article you have made if you have not made anything to wear. You will be evaluated on the finished project and how well you have put together what you made with what you are wearing. You will also be evaluated on what you have learned in your first or second year of the Clothing project.

Purchased garments

All 4-H members, except Cloverbuds, are eligible to participate in the purchased category. You are not evaluated against constructed articles. Remember, if you choose to enter in this category, you must have a garment which was chosen for specific reasons:

• How it fits in your wardrobe
• Color
• Fashion
• Care
• Cost
• Cost comparisons
• Why you chose to buy it

Thoughtful, careful consideration, and consumer decision-making are a major part of the evaluation of the purchased garment. Members will also be judged on the total look of the garment. This means choice of hosiery, jewelry, shoes, accessories, etc. The Purchased Exhibit Checklist and Purchased Clothing Wardrobe Analysis will help you prepare your purchased garment exhibit for the County Fair.

Awards & recognition

Everyone who participates receives a participation ribbon. The traditional blue, red, white ribbons are not awarded.

Court of Honor is the selection of the top constructed and purchased outfits for each grade category. Court of Honor is selected by the judges weighing both the one-on-one conference judging and the overall line up at the end of judging. Judges evaluation form. 

State Fair trips are selected after all of the judging is complete and trip winners are selected from constructed, purchased and upcycled garments in grades 6-8 and grades 9 and up. The number of State Fair trips is based on the number of members who exhibited in the clothing project the previous year- usually between 4 and 7 trips.

Tips from past judges

• Garments should be clean and pressed/ironed.
• Poise and posture are important to convey confidence.
• Think about your total appearance including hair, nails, etc.
• Know your fabric costs and care.
• You are being watched and judged the entire time you are in the evaluation room.

Evaluation - how does it work?

• Each participant will be evaluated individually through conference judging.
• After an entire grade level is judged individually, the group will return as a whole for the judge’s final selections.
• You must remain until all judging for your grade level (Cloverbud, Grades 3-5, 6-8, or 9 and up) is completed.
• Participants are free to leave once their grade level judging is complete.
• Judges are provided the following evaluation form as a uniform guide to the evaluation  process.

• Judging will take place in two rooms at the same time.
• The following is the actual time schedule for judging. Please be on time.

Cedar room

Cloverbuds

• 5:15 p.m.   Registration
• 5:30 p.m.   Judging
• Modeling practice and photos will follow judging and you are then free to leave.

Grades 3-5, Constructed, Upcycled and Purchased

• 6:00 p.m.   Registration
• 6:15 p.m.   Judging Constructed, Upcycled then Purchased
• Modeling practice will take place before or after judging.
• Photos will follow judging and you are then free to leave.

Oak room

Grades 6-8, Constructed & Upcycled 

• 5:15 p.m.   Registration
• 5:30 p.m.   Judging Constructed then Upcycled 
• Modeling practice and photos will follow judging and you are then free to leave.

Grades 9 and up, Constructed & Upcycled 

• 6:00 p.m.   Registration
• 6:15 p.m.   Judging Constructed then Upcycled

Grades 6 and up, Purchased

• 7:45 p.m.   Registration
• 8:00 p.m.   Judging
• Modeling practice will take place before or after judging.
• Photos will follow judging and you are then free to leave.

Schedule

• 10:00 a.m.   Pick up your garment in the 4-H Exhibit Building if you entered it as a static project.
• 10:30 a.m.   Be dressed and ready at the outdoor stage for practice.
• 11:30 a.m.   Public Fashion Review begins at the outdoor stage. 

Note the following:

• You do not need to sign up separately to participate in the public show. 4-H staff will ensure everyone's names are added to the program and you will receive premium. 
• You need to pick up your garment in the Exhibit Building at 10 a.m. if it is on display and return it after the Revue. You are responsible for returning the garment on a hanger and covered with the plastic bag, as it was, to the display area.
• A place will be provided to change on the grounds. Check in the Exhibit Building for the location.
• Do not leave items in the changing rooms. 
• There will be one practice before the Revue at 10:30 a.m. sharp. It is important to be on time and pay attention during practice.
• Each person will receive a cash participation award. Court of Honor and State Fair trips will be announced at the conclusion of the Public Revue.

Example narratives:

You will need to submit a narrative when you register for the event to be read at the public revue. This description will be read as you model on stage during the Fashion Revue. You should include your name, age, and club. You may also want to include such things as: type of fabric; specific things about your garment, i.e. set in sleeves, back centered zipper, elastic waistband, etc.; choice of accessories; where you plan to wear it; etc. Be creative and descriptive about your garment or article. Please write your narration so that it takes at least 30 seconds to read (about 5-6 sentences).  We need it to last long enough for you to walk across the stage. Here are a few examples of descriptions:

Constructed example:

Just two years into the clothing project, Sue Brown decided to make this beautiful emerald green dress. It’s 100% cotton with a full gathered skirt and set-in short sleeves. She had lots to learn with all the basting, gathering, seam-finishing, and hemming. Sue belongs to the Clever Clovers 4-H Club and will be in 9th grade this fall. She’s planning to wear this for church activities and times when she needs to be a little more dressed up. Keep up the good work, Sue!

Constructed example:

Nine year-old Jim Johnson has just completed 3rd grade and is in the clothing project for the first time. He is an independent 4-H member. He likes skate boarding and found a fun flannel print to make pants. A gold cotton knit was a perfect complement to the pants and offered him some new challenges. Jim now has a great outfit to lounge around in at home in the evenings. You’re looking pretty comfy, there, Jim!

Purchased example:

Nikki Anderson likes the clearance racks at Kohl’s. That is where she found her 100% cotton sundress for $14.40. It’s a bright pink and white tropical print that is smocked and features a lace-up and tied banded waist. It has a lovely flowing skirt that is sure to stir in a tropical breeze. She is wearing a pair of sequined flip-flops that keep her outfit casual and cool.  Nikki just finished the 7th grade and has been in the clothing project for 2 years. I think it’s time to take a cruise, Nikki!

This project is open to 4-H members in grades 3 and up. All purchased garment exhibits must be accompanied by an 8 ½ “ x 11” notebook (binder) at the County Fair.  This is not required for the Fashion Revue event. The items listed below are divided into sections that are required in the notebook, and suggestions that could move your projects onto a higher level. There are different expectations to match your experience and age. Begin with the basics and add more as you advance in the project.

Requirements

• Garment (on hanger)
• Folder or notebook for display with name and county
• Color photo of 4-H’er wearing outfit on cover and labeled with color of complexion, hair, and eyes.
• Cost of garment
• Explanation of why garment was purchased
• Examples of ways it will be used in existing wardrobe
• Simple inventory

Rules

• Fashion Revue is planned for 4-H members who wish to model a garment they have made or purchased which is needed in their wardrobe.
• Participants may model any clothing they have constructed, restyled, or purchased as a part of their 4-H Clothing Project.
• Purchased and constructed garments will be evaluated according to similar criteria including first impression; individual poise, posture, and grooming; the outfit on the individual (design, color, fit, accessories, workmanship, etc); and the intended purpose.

The judging process should be constructed to allow the 4-H’ers the opportunity to:

• Build self-confidence and poise by developing and understanding of “self” which aids in the selection and making of clothing that is becoming and expressive of one’s personality.
• Develop skills in planning, selecting, and making becoming clothing for different occasions.
• Select suitable and becoming accessories and model with confidence a garment made to meet one’s wardrobe needs.
• Develop good posture and grooming habits.
• Acquire knowledge and skills in planning, presenting, and participating in Fashion Revue.
• Practice leadership skills and roles, take part in community affairs, and demonstrate citizenship responsibility.
• Explore career, job, and productive leisure opportunities.
• Develop skills, knowledge, and attitudes for lifelong use.
