The Serve It Up Safely™ online course is a convenient, effective way to meet the State of Minnesota's continuing education requirement to renew your certified food protection manager certification. Our courses are also excellent for employee food safety training.
- Register for four courses. Each course is approved for one hour of continuing education for Minnesota certified food protection managers.
- Pick the topics that interest you and study at your own rate. These interactive modules include videos, quizzes, case studies, tip sheets and resources to download.
- After you register, the self-paced course is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Complete it at home, work, or anywhere you have access to a computer.

Time and cost
The amount of time the online course will take you depends on the number of hours you need to get recertified. The State of Minnesota requires four hours every three years for food manager recertification.
Each course costs $25 and is approved for one hour of continuing education for Minnesota Certified Food Protection Managers and takes one to two hours to complete. Once you register, you will have access to the course for 90 days.
How the course works
The course uses a combination of videos, activities, case studies, quizzes, downloadable resources and more to keep you engaged.
Completion certificates — you’ll receive a certificate of completion for one hour for each module you complete.
Send certificate copies with renewal application — once you’ve met the requirement for four hours of continuing education, you need to send copies of the certificates with your renewal application. (See the Minnesota CFM Renewal page on the Minnesota Department of Health website.)
Food safety employee training benefits foodservice workers and your business. Food establishments are responsible for keeping food safe for their customers. To reduce potential foodborne health hazards in Minnesota foodservice establishments, all persons working in foodservice should have basic food safety training.
Food safety employee training provides basic need-to-know safe food handling practices for employees with little to no experience as well as a refresher for those with experience.
Food safety employee training is for people currently working in or interested in working in the foodservice industry. These training modules are designed for everyone from entry-level to experienced staff, from wait staff to salad preparer to chef to dishwasher.
Time and cost
The course has 12 individual course modules. Each costs $25 and takes one to two hours to complete.
Once you register, you will have access to the course for 90 days.

The Serve It Up Safely™ Online Courses are approved to meet the continuing education requirements for Certified Food Protection Manager renewal. It does not meet initial certification requirements. If you need initial certification to register as a certified food protection manager, visit the Minnesota Department of Health's Food Manager Certification website to find an initial course. The courses can be used for employee and person in charge training without a Certified Food Protection Manager Certification.
Step 2: register
Follow the instructions and provide the required information. This registration system will:
- Guide you to "login or create a new guest account" to use for the course.
- Be sure to keep record of the Internet ID and password you set when you register.
- Collect basic information about you, needed by the course instructor.
- Collect your registration fee of $25 per course module. (Required as a credit card payment.)
- Give you the link to access the online course after completing the above steps. (See below for follow-up steps.)
Step 3: access the course
After you register, you will receive an email with a link to access the online course using your Internet ID and password you set when you registered.
You can access the online course at any time and complete it at your leisure within the 90-day allotment.
Do I need to complete the course all at once?
No. Because this course is online and self paced, you can stop and start again as you choose. It may be helpful to save the course link in your Internet favorites/bookmarks so you can easily access it again.
Can I receive documentation for the time spent in the course?
Yes! Follow the instructions at the beginning of the course. When you have completed the certification quiz, the certificate of completion information will be requested. It will ask for the name as it should appear on the certificate and the email address where it should be sent. Shortly after, you will receive the certificate of completion in your inbox.
