Give to the U of M Extension Horse program

Horse standing near hay in winter scene.

The U of M Extension Horse program has one goal: to increase horse owners’ knowledge and management ability to improve the quality of care for horses and their environment through research-based information.

We work closely with industry professionals, University colleagues, veterinarians, and horse owners across the state and nation to address timely issues facing the horse industry in collaborative and meaningful ways.

Research areas include

  • Biosecurity and disease transmission at large equine events
  • Evaluation of different forage species for use in horse hay and pasture systems
  • Determining more accurate ways to estimate horse bodyweight and ideal bodyweight
  • Nutritional needs of horses diagnosed with obesity, laminitis and Equine Metabolic Syndrome
  • Effectiveness of different fly repellents
  • Evaluation of different hay feeders and feeding systems
  • The impact of nutrition on horse health

Minnesota has a vibrant and diverse horse industry that generates nearly $1 billion in economic activity annually and is home to approximately 155,000 horses and 15,000 horse owners, ranking Minnesota in the top 15 most horse populated states in the U.S.

Research results are shared with the scientific and horse-owning communities through in-person Extension programs and field days, a monthly e-Newsletter, website information, recorded webinars, mobile apps, online courses, YouTube videos, and posts on social media. Annually, the University of Minnesota Extension Horse program efforts reach almost 2 million horse owners and professionals.
