Developing local tourism

How is your community planning for tourism?

Tourism has evolved as a major economic development priority for many communities. More communities want to link strategic tourism planning with sustainable development.

Extension has a long history of assisting Minnesota communities that want to promote local economic growth through tourism. Our educators work with communities at all stages of tourism development, whether you’re in the early stages of development or working to diversify a mature tourism industry.

Community Tourism Development manual

Some communities prefer to manage the tourism development process on their own, so we developed our Community Tourism Development. The manual applies theory to real life by delivering the essentials of planning, developing and managing tourist destinations from a community standpoint.

It provides organizations and individuals with a development process and materials to help communities plan, launch and expand tourism as a means of long-term economic development. These concepts suit communities of all sizes and in various stages of tourism development.

The fourth edition of the manual includes updated data and changes that have emerged since the previous edition. It also includes access to electronic versions of the worksheets and assessments in the book, allowing the user to input local data for easier use.
