Intentional and engaging outdoor learning experiences provide young people with a unique opportunity for transformation and growth.
In this workshop, participants will gain strategies for increasing access for young people in outdoor education projects and learning opportunities through eight key components of developing transformative learning experiences.
The concepts covered will include:
- Developing a sense of safety and support
- Building an environment for positive social support and the ability to break away from normal life
- Providing a guided experience in nature and invitations to explore
- Engaging young people in experiences that offer challenges and intensity
- Promoting activities that foster social emotional learning
Participants will experience group discussions and interactive idea-generation. They will also identify audiences underrepresented in outdoor education, cultivate approaches to ensure equity and inclusiveness in the educational design and development process, develop strategies to mobilize youth as change agents of social justice through adventure-based programs and learn how to design outdoor education as a system for building resilience for all youth.
