Across the Upper Midwest, the farming population is aging. The 2022 Census of Agriculture reported an average producer age of 58.1 years, with more than one-third over age 65. As this trend continues, many farmers express a desire to age in place on their farms, yet often lack support to do so safely.

The University of Minnesota Extension and North Dakota State University Extension Aging on the Farm project addressed a gap in accessible, agriculture-specific aging resources by developing educational materials for farm families and agricultural professionals. Join us to learn about the lessons learned and the materials we developed as a part of this project.

This webinar is part of Extension's 2026 Healthy Aging Month Webinar Series.

Presenters

  • Emily Krekelberg is a Farm Safety and Health Extension Educator for University of Minnesota Extension. Her work focuses on youth farm safety, incident prevention training, and mental health in agriculture. She is based in Rochester, MN.

  • Angie Johnson: In 2022, NDSU Extension revived its farm safety program after a 17-year vacancy, hiring Angie Johnson. Now a specialist, her Master’s research analyzed Sanford Trauma Center data, revealing that producers aged 65+ face the highest injury rates — underscoring a vital need for aging-related safety resources on the farm.

  • Tana Haugen-Brown is a University of Minnesota Extension educator and Co-Coordinator for the Pesticide Safety and Environmental Education program. Since 2009, she has led the Private Pesticide Applicator team, empowering local producers to achieve certification while prioritizing safety, effective crop application, and environmentally sound pest management practices across landscapes.
