The Benton County 4-H Livestock Committee organized an engaging Livestock Quality Assurance (LQA) certification for dedicated 4-H youth in grades 6 and above, alongside an informative livestock clinic at Sean and Angie Arnold's farm in Foley this past weekend. This essential certification is a gateway for 4-H youth aspiring to showcase their livestock at the highly anticipated Minnesota State Fair. The event was made possible by the efforts of Benton County graduates and committed volunteers who facilitated a series of informative sessions.
During Level 1, participants explored crucial topics beginning with “Read & Follow Labels,” presented by 4-H graduate Emily Schrendel in collaboration with graduating 4-H’er Skylar M. They emphasized the importance of understanding product labels for both medications and feed. Another vital session, “Proper Handling & Care,” was taught by 4-H graduates Abigail Nelson and Ashley Betker, with support from Abbey Jurek. One participant, 7th grader Bradley P from Royalton, shared, "I enjoyed connecting with other 4-H'ers who raise livestock. I learned to read various medication and feed labels, which will help me take better care of my animals."
Level 2 focused on more advanced subjects, such as “Biosecurity” and “Environmental Stewardship,” led by Nick Achen, a 4-H volunteer and member of the livestock committee. In the training session titled "Speaking Up for Animal Agriculture," Emily Schreindl encouraged the youth, saying, "You are passionate about your animals, and you know more about them than many others do. Don’t hesitate to share your knowledge and answer questions that people might have." Both levels also included discussions on “Ethics” and “Speaking Up for Animal Agriculture,” facilitated by Ann Olson, 4-H Extension Educator, along with 4-H graduates Chase Dahler and all the instructors mentioned.
