What adventure will you choose?

Learn more about 4-H outdoor education by exploring these four project areas on your own time. Each of these topics will guide you through fun activities you can do outside. Open to all, but geared towards youth in grades 5-9.

Into the outdoors

Whether you're heading out on your first day hike or your hundredth, it is important to take time to consider the necessary steps to have a safe and meaningful outdoor adventure.

Birding

There are over 9,000 species of birds in the world and many of them can be found right outside your door. Birding is a fun and challenging way to connect with the natural world in your community. In this session, you will learn what to notice when observing birds, use the Merlin app to identify birds and explore nature journaling. Guides will also be provided to show you how to use binoculars and make your own bird feeders.

ATV safety

Learning about ATV safety is important for keeping yourself and others safe from injury. In this session, you will have the opportunity to learn about ATV safety equipment and clothing, discover proper machine fit, prepare to do a pre-ride inspection and apply responsible, environmentally friendly practices to your ATV excursions.

Exploring the forest (coming soon)

Explore and manage your own forest! In this session, you will explore the George Washington National Forest through a virtual field trip and then explore your own community through a nature hike and creating artwork from nature. You'll finish your exploration by managing your own forest.
