Carlton County, Minnesota Economic Futures Workshop

Key findings for communities

  • Carlton County’s economy is growing. Growth industries include health care, services, and administrative and support and waste management and remediation. While manufacturing jobs declined, most of the job losses were due to industry and national trends.
  • Industries studied in the workshop include paper mills, truck transportation, commercial construction, beef production, hospitals, accounting and tax preparation, wholesale trade, and banking.
  • Participant ideas for supporting industry in Carlton County include: continuing economic development efforts, providing financial education, promoting technical training opportunities, supporting housing development and building public school partnerships.

About this report

To learn more about Carlton County’s current economic situation and to explore future opportunities for economic development, community leaders from Carlton County participated in the University of Minnesota’s Economic Futures Workshop on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 in Cloquet, Minnesota. The report summarizes the workshop. The workshop was hosted by the Carlton County Economic Development Authority.

The Economic Futures Workshop helps community leaders look objectively at the state of their local economy. The workshop examines the interactions within an economy – among businesses and between businesses and consumers. Using information about how these linkages function, leaders can begin to understand the full implications of change on the local economy. The Futures Workshop can also help communities understand how efforts by different organizations can affect the economy.
