The Minnesota 4-H plant science team offers a new “Grow a Monster” challenge each year to engage youth through a hands-on agriculture learning experience. The participating youth are given kits that include the seeds and the plant care instructions needed to participate in the challenge in their home gardens. These challenges are designed to spark an interest in plant science while making agriculture accessible.
This year’s challenge went beyond growing giant pumpkins. Participants explored plant science, navigated the ups and downs of gardening, and worked alongside family members throughout the growing season.
As a part of the challenge, young growers from across the state used molds to transform their ordinary pumpkins into creative, monstrous shapes. These unique and imaginative creations showcased their creativity and dedication. From quirky shapes to giant pumpkins, participants in the challenge didn’t just grow plants; they grew their problem-solving abilities, gained hands-on experience, and deepened their connection to agriculture.
Faribault County participant, Beau S., was awarded largest pumpkin by weight. His pumpkin weighed in at 231 pounds.
Whether participants pursue farming and gardening or continue to explore their creative passions, this year’s contest was a reminder of the power of hands-on learning and the joy of growing something from the ground up.
