Small farm startup school

The Small Farm Startup School is for small-scale landowners or renters interested in learning how to use their land for agricultural purposes. The course helps new and beginning farmers on their journey to becoming successful. We acknowledge that no two farms look alike and will tailor the course to meet the needs of the participants.

The course begins with goal setting and individual property inventory, then addresses soil management, fruit and vegetable crops, livestock, food safety, equipment, finances and marketing. You’ll also have plenty of time for networking and questions. Farm tours and farmer panels are included. All participants will develop a business plan.

Topics:

  • Taking stock: What do I have and what do I want to do? Develop short and long-term goals, and complete an inventory and property map.
  • Available resources and tools. Learn about the county-based resources available to reach your goals. We will discuss marketing strategies for different agricultural products.
  • Soil, water, air, climate: Learn about soil structure, health and fertility, and how to use integrated sustainable systems to be a good steward of all your natural resources.
  • Home-grown fruits, nuts and vegetables: Successful vegetable and fruit production for home use or sale. Managing fruit trees and vines. Explore options for selling produce. Food safety planning.
  • Animal care and management: Animal husbandry, manure management, pasture management, zoning and permitting, labor required and costs of livestock; emphasis on poultry, sheep, goats and cattle.
  • Tours and panels: Visit small farm businesses to get ideas and inspiration. Q&A with a farmer panel. Network with suppliers, vendors, buyers, and information providers.

Topics are subject to change based on the needs of the participants.

Cost

  • $250 covers two people from one farm in the host counties
  • $350 covers two people from one farm (out of county)

Courses are offered in person throughout the state, usually in the fall. When we schedule new sessions, times, locations and registration information will be listed at the bottom of this page.
