MISA enters new era with transition to University of Minnesota Extension

The Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture (MISA) is transitioning to a new model with new leadership and an updated relationship with University of Minnesota Extension.

MISA was established in 1991 to bring the sustainable agriculture and University communities together to develop and promote sustainable agriculture in Minnesota and beyond. As part of the current transition, MISA will become part of Extension and will be led by Extension’s Regional Development Sustainable Partnerships (RSDP) director Kathy Draeger. Longtime MISA executive director Helene Murray retired earlier this year.

“I am so excited that MISA is moving into a new chapter and continuing the work of all of the people and organizations who have been sustainability advocates for so long,” Draeger said. “Bringing MISA, Extension and RSDP into a closer relationship allows these organizations to leverage the relationships and resources built over the past 35 years.”

The Sustainers Coalition is a partner with Extension in supporting MISA; it is comprised of several Minnesota groups, including:

  • Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy
  • Land Stewardship Project
  • Minnesota Farmers Market Association
  • Renewing the Countryside
  • Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota
  • The Food Group

As the organization moves forward, MISA is seeking new board members and is accepting applications for three-year terms until August 27. The board of directors plays a critical role in guiding strategy, strengthening community connections, and ensuring that MISA’s work reflects the needs and values of Minnesota’s diverse agricultural landscape. Board members will represent the agriculture, University or non-profit communities and will meet three to four times per year.
