Scientist expands understanding at Wells field day
Rose Mumbi, a research scientist with architectural design firm ISG, creates drainage and water management solutions for her clients in Minnesota. At the “How drainage and tillage affect your bottom line” field day in Wells, she listened to research presentations from Extension Specialists Fabian Fernandez, Anna Cates and Seth Naeve.
The experience helped her recall the stream that runs through her grandparents’ farm in the central region of Kenya. When she was a child, she could swim in that water.
“We would drink that water. Then it was still OK. But if I go back today, I cannot do the same thing anymore.”
For Mumbi, applying multiple solutions to keep systems in balance is most important. Research can lead to new best management practices. “We know that once you couple drainage with other conservation practices, it’s more useful.”
