New homeowners or beginning gardeners looking to build confidence in caring for their home landscapes will have a unique opportunity this fall through University of Minnesota Extension’s Backyard Basics for Beginners program.
Designed for new homeowners and beginning gardeners, Backyard Basics for Beginners introduces participants to the essential skills needed to create healthy, resilient outdoor spaces. Each session blends instruction with hands‑on practice, helping residents understand soils, how to responsibly manage their lawn, care for trees, and grow food at home.
These skills encourage practical behavior changes such as soil testing before fertilizing, mowing at recommended heights, correctly planting trees, and planning a vegetable garden to grow food for your family. By applying these practices, participants build confidence in maintaining their property and create healthier landscapes that support their households and the broader community.
Included in the cost of the course is a soil test. Participants will be able to take a soil test in their own lawn or garden and send it in to be analyzed by the University of Minnesota Soil Testing Lab. During the last week of class, participants will receive reports and learn how to read them, as well as receive individualized feedback for their growing situation.
