Minnesota 87: Red Lake County

Finding success, personal growth in the 4-H poultry bowl

4-H Poultry Bowl teams study a curriculum about all species of poultry and test their knowledge against other teams. Hailey H. of Red Lake County (pictured left) and her team placed third in the nation at the National Poultry and Egg Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.

Hailey is pictured with team members from Pennington County (Brianne E. and Coach Chad T.). Briley O. and Rylan T (not pictured) competed with the team leading up to the national event.

“The team practiced weekly for a year and participated in local, regional and state competitions,” said Emily Schmiedeberg, Extension 4-H youth development educator. “After an excellent performance at state, they spent the summer learning more and preparing for the national competition.”

For Hailey, all the work paid off. She said she’s gained knowledge, sportsmanship and leadership skills — and confidence. “I am going to make sure I make this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as memorable as it can be,” she said.
