4-H experience defined educational path for young alum
Nathan Goldade, a recent 4-H alum and U of M student, says his time in 4-H led him to pursue a degree in agricultural education.
Being in 4-H as a youth led Nathan Goldade to the path he is on today– an undergraduate studying agricultural education at the University of Minnesota.
“4-H showed me what I wanted to do, and that was working with youth,” Nathan said.
A member of Anoka County 4-H for seven years, Nathan discovered his passion while participating in activities ranging from performing arts and Minnesota 4-H State Arts-In to Wildlife Project Bowl and shooting sports. He was also a camp counselor and youth leader in his later years as a member of 4-H.
For Nathan, 4-H’s strength is in its diverse programming that appeals to youth of different interests and backgrounds. “4-H is more than just showing livestock. It’s about leadership, relationships and making yourself and those around you better,” he said.
Nathan was a member of 4-H State Arts-In for five years, performing for audiences daily at the Minnesota State Fair. Reflecting on his time at this 22-day intensive arts experience, Nathan said, “4-H taught me to always be yourself, and people will find you and accept you for who you are. That’s what State Arts-In excels at doing. It’s such a welcoming environment.”
From 4-H youth leader to future youth educator
With a dedication to service-oriented leadership, Nathan plans to use his degree to become a high school agriculture teacher in Minnesota. “I want to share my love of agriculture with youth, and agricultural education is a great way to do that,” he said.
On campus, Nathan is continuing to develop his leadership skills. He serves as the new member educator for Farmhouse Fraternity and was the sentinel for the Agricultural Education, Communication and Marketing Club.
4-H has helped Nathan pay for college. He is a recipient of the Pace Scholarship, which recognizes youth for their leadership, achievements, career goals and future leadership potential.
“The Pace Scholarship gave me funds to continue my education. It will help me take better care of myself and focus on my education and not worry about how much it’s going to cost me.”
