As often happens in California, University of Minnesota Extension soil fertility specialist Fabian Fernandez had a celebrity encounter. Only this time, the celebrity was him.

Waiting for his flight back to Minnesota in the San Diego airport, a passerby recognized his voice from Extension’s Nutrient Management Podcast.

“I asked him where he was from, thinking that he was also on his way home to Minnesota, but he said that he lives in Canada,” Fernandez said. “I thought to myself, this might be what it is like to be a famous person.”

The Nutrient Management podcast, intended for Minnesota farmers and agriculture professionals, is filling a niche for podcast enthusiasts around the world interested in up-to-date research and recommendations on soil fertility. The podcast features a rotating cast of Extension specialists and educators discussing everything from micronutrients to nitrate testing. Each month, the team shares what they’re seeing and learning on farms and research plots across the state, including local and seasonal recommendations.

The podcast, which began in the summer of 2017, recently celebrated its 20th episode with a wide-ranging conversation on spring phosphorus and potassium recommendations.

You can follow the podcast and other crop news on Extension’s Minnesota Crop News blog. To get new episodes straight to your phone, subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher.
