Lake of the Woods County Farm Family

Tom and Erin Olson

The Olsons’ farm in northern Minnesota was established by Tom’s grandfather in 1920. Tom farmed with his father, Paul, until Paul’s passing in 2009.

The Olsons grow small grains and timothy seeds on 2,000 acres. They own a 200-cow herd that is grazed in an intensive, rotational grazing system on native grass, cover crops, and standing corn and soybeans. The Olsons’ farm is certified by the Minnesota Ag Water Quality Certification Program with endorsements in soil health, climate-smart and wildlife.

Tom is the farm’s main operator; Erin assists wherever and whenever she can with the cattle. Tom and Erin’s son, Levi, helps on the farm, and along with his wife, Jenna, they have four sons: Henry, Theodore, Joel and Beau. Tom and Erin’s daughter, Deanna, and her husband Darby Block are willing to help around the operation when needed. They have three children: Britta, Mandi and Thor.

Tom is an elder at Lakeroad Chapel; he is chair of the Minnesota Beef Council and past president of the Northwestern Stockmen's Association. Tom is a member of the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Erin is a Bright Squad community volunteer. The Olsons are Beef Quality Assurance certified.
