In the summer of 2023, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs will open the new Montevideo Veterans Home, which will serve 72 residents. The Montevideo Home's design reflects a prairie-style inspired design that integrates natural materials such as wood and stone into the spaces. The public spaces include a Town Center featuring a small coffee shop/cafe, theater/meeting room, family dining room, meditation room/chapel, and club room. A large community room is also included and was funded by a generous community donation.
In collaboration with the Swift County Veterans Service Office, community member, Bonnie Kluver, and various groups and organizations within Swift County, we are seeking the help of 4-H members, parents and volunteers to make quilts to fit twin sized beds that will be used at the Montevideo Home.
Per Veterans Service Officer, Dave Barrett, they really prefer patriotic patterns and twin size to match the beds and to be small enough to be folded for the lap.
Additional information regarding quilts from Bonnie include:
- Long twin quilts, finished size 68 x 95 inches
- Fabrics should be cotton or cotton polyester
- Any pattern is fine, just so it fits the suggested size.
*Bonnie has been cutting 6 inch squares using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. 14 squares per row with 19 rows - this gets a finished size pretty close to the suggested one.
Clubs might be interested in donating batting--low loft works best or backing fabric. Also, cotton or cotton/polyester--5 1/2 yards per quilt is needed.
Bonnie has a stack of cut blocks. Clubs can sew these together if they wish.
Not a quilter?? You don't have to be. You can contribute to this project if you can cut a square and tie a knot! Bonnie will be visiting clubs in November, please welcome her warmly.
You are a quilter/sewer....or what to give it a try?? The Swift County 4-H office has 7 sewing machines ready for use!!
We will be scheduling work days for this project beginning in January.
