There will be some jumbo jack-o-lanterns this year! See who grew the biggest, roundest and orangest pumpkins.
In May, 4-H educators handed out jumbo pumpkin seeds and instructions on how to plant and care for pumpkins throughout the summer, with a friendly competition to make it more fun. Contest winners have been announced, with the largest pumpkin weighing in at 139 pounds!
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Supersize My Pumpkin project. "This is a great chance to learn about how things grow and where our food comes from," says Evan Jensen, a 4-H'er in Lincoln County.
"In 4-H, it's not the size of the pumpkin or the color of the ribbon that matter most, but the learning and connections," says Michele VanDyke, Extension 4-H youth development educator in Lincoln County. "The contest adds an incentive for many youth, and youth who didn't want to compete also learned the secrets of growing a super-sized pumpkin.
"It was amazing to see everyone's finished projects," Sam Jens, 4-H youth development educator in Lyon County told participants. "As you know we had a battle of the counties." Lincoln County took the crown for 2021.
The first-place winner in the two largest pumpkin categories will receive a gift card from the project sponsor, Runnings. Second and third places, along with the champions from the roundest and orangest categories, will receive 4-H prizes.
