This year, the 4-H Lunch Buddy program has gone where it has never been before...ZOOM!
4-H Lunch Buddy mentors from East Rapids Elementary met their 2nd grade Buddies for the first time this February. Excitement filled the zoom room as buddies and mentors began to appear on the screen. After a brief introduction to the program, Lunch Buddies were sent into breakout rooms. In the breakout room, mentors and Buddies had a chance to get to know each other and read a book together. There was much chatter, laughter, and even a school tour! The meeting ended with a chorus of “Thank you!” and “Good Bye!” as well as a sea of smiling faces.
The cooperating teacher expressed much appreciation to the mentors for their willingness to learn new technology so this valuable experience could continue. Their efforts continue to build positive relationships with Lunch Buddy youth and support a love of reading.
Mentors and youth will meet twice monthly using this virtual connection. On alternate weeks they participate in a pen-pal exchange.
