Cooking Matters for Teens is an educational program that teaches adolescents in 6th grade and above how to make healthy food choices and how to prepare healthy meals and snacks for themselves, their families, and their friends.
Participants in Cooking Matters for Teens will learn the basic principles of safe cooking and healthy eating. They also will learn how to:
- Eat more fruits and vegetables and choose healthy beverages.
- Choose whole grains and eat breakfast more often.
- Prepare healthy meals and snacks at home.
- Make smart choices when shopping for food.
- Use what they learn in the Cooking Matters sessions to prepare healthier homemade meals, drinks, and snacks.
Space and time requirements
This program consists of six, weekly 2-hour workshops. Sessions can be adapted to meet the learning needs of participants, and within reason to fit the space and time needs of the partnering agency.
Cooking Matter for Teens features numerous hands-on activities, including practice reading recipes and food labels, as well as practice using knives safely and comparing unit prices of foods. Participants also will taste a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and prepare a variety of dishes, including a healthier version of a favorite meal. During the last session, young participants set goals to continue using what they learned in the course.
