Cooking Matters for Kids is an educational program for children in 3rd through 5th grade that teaches them how to prepare healthy meals and snacks and to make smart food choices wherever they go — at home, at school, at the store, or out to eat.
Participants in Cooking Matters for Kids will learn the basic principles of healthy eating and safe cooking methods. They also will learn how to:
- Eat more fruits and vegetables and choose healthy beverages.
- Choose whole grains and eat breakfast every day.
- Prepare healthy meals and snacks at home.
- Make smart choices when shopping for food or eating out.
- Use what they learn in the Cooking Matters sessions to prepare healthier homemade meals and snacks.
Space and time requirements
This program consists of six, weekly 2-hour workshops. Sessions can be adapted to meet the learning needs of participants, and within reason to fit the space and time needs of the partnering agency.
Cooking Matters for Kids features numerous hands-on activities, including practice reading recipes, using knives safely, and assembling kitchen equipment and tools for cooking. Participants also will taste a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and prepare a variety of dishes, including healthier versions of popular fast foods and celebration foods. During the last session, young participants set goals to continue using what they learned in the course.
