Community conversations

Note: Vital Connections on Air was a podcast that discussed community development issues related to leadership, civic engagement, economic development and tourism. Episodes of Vital Connections on Air were produced from June 2017 to March 2023. In 2024, the Extension Center for Community Vitality became the Extension Center for Community Development. Podcast host Christy Kallevig changed positions within Extension. Guests may have also changed positions and/or organizations, and views and research may have been updated.

How do you discuss ideas and issues with others?

It's a common complaint we hear from community leaders. "We can't get people to show up for meetings." It's ironic that people really do want community connections but, for a lot of reasons, don't always come to the table to talk about community life.

Jody Horntvedt shares nuts-and-bolts advice for creating healthy community conversations.

Conversation host: Christy Kallevig, University of Minnesota Extension

Guest: Jody Horntvedt, University of Minnesota Extension

Recap

  • Conversations are powerful. They lead to knowing each other and trusting each other.
  • Author Peter Block, in Community: The Structure of Belonging, notes that community conversations can shift from problems to possibilities, and commit people to create the future together.
  • Why don’t people show up for conversations? Horntvedt says if they don’t feel comfortable, they’re not going to show up. The most important thing is to extend invitations. Jody discusses tips for extending invitations:
    • Ask who should be invited.
    • Invite people not typically at the table. New perspectives reveal important information and experiences.
    • Think about space, time of day, and creating safe spaces.
    • Pay attention to when meetings happen, recognizing that different jobs have different schedules.
  • Jody also discusses how planning and good facilitation tools make conversations more successful.
