Southeast Minnesota towns share wastewater treatment successes

March 27, 2018
Greg Olson

An innovative project with the University of Minnesota Extension Southeast Regional Sustainable Development Partnership (Southeast RSDP) is spreading wastewater treatment successes from town to town. The Southeast Minnesota Wastewater Initiative (SMWI) is a special grant-funded program of the Southeast Minnesota Water Resources Board. SWMI works as a subcontracted project with the Cannon River Watershed Partnership (CRWP), a Northfield-based environmental nonprofit.

Despite its success, some small towns needing upgrades still weren’t aware of the Initiative’s services. SMWI Community Wastewater Facilitator Sheila Craig had the idea to foster peer-to-peer learning among southeast Minnesota communities to spread the word. The Southeast RSDP board approved a project to develop video interviews with community leaders who had worked with the Initiative. Aaron Job, an undergraduate in the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication, developed a series of four videos.
