Rush City community garden fills food gap, creates gathering space

October 21, 2018
Rush City community garden

Residents of Rush City had some land and funds to start a community garden, and plenty of motivation—there is no full-service grocery story within the city limits. Traveling to surrounding towns for fresh vegetables wasn’t what they wanted to be doing with their summer days.

They contacted the University of Minnesota Extension office in Chisago County, where Sue Humble, Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program coordinator, knew exactly who could help.

“Master Gardener volunteers pulled together the partners to establish who would be in charge, what was needed, who would manage the funds and more,” says Humble. “One volunteer aided the Rush City Garden Club and took the lead on helping to establish the gardens. Others held question and answer sessions and taught planting.”

Like the best community gardens, it provided a space for the residents of Rush City where they could gather as well as produce healthy fruits and vegetables to eat.

Other support provided by City of Rush City, Rush City Garden Club, Plastec Corporation, and Basement Solutions
