Pennington County Farm Family

Novak Farms

Gary Novak started farming in 1968 following the death of his father. Gary graduated from high school in 1970 and worked various manufacturing and construction jobs to supplement farming. Arlene graduated in 1974 and married Gary a year later. The couple added rental land to their operation in 1978 and the farm continued to grow and diversify after that. Gary and Arlene have two children, Garrett and Jennifer, and six grandchildren.

The Novaks raise small grains, corn, soybeans, dry edible beans and peas on their farm south of St. Hilaire in northwest Minnesota.

Gary and Arlene farm with Garrett and his wife, Andrea. Garret and Andrea have four daughters: Natalie, Miranda, Aliyah and Bristol. Within the past few years, the Novaks’ granddaughters have assisted with harvest and many other tasks around the farm. The Novaks’ daughter, Jennifer, assists with seed delivery and at harvest when needed. Jennifer and her husband, David Nelson, have two children, Julia and Dawson

The Novaks are members of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls. Arlene is a member of the Penn-Mar-Red chapter of Minnesota Agri-Women, treasurer of River Falls Township Board, President of the St. Hilaire Rural Fire Association, vice president of the Garden Valley Technologies board of directors, and a member of the Pennington County Shoreland Management Committee.
