Extension encourages saving, no matter the amount
Saving money often seems difficult since there are so many demands on our spending but there are ways to begin saving that can help you establish a habit and stash away some needed funds.
Start small. Saving change can be a good way to begin a savings habit. Try saving pennies, nickels, dimes or quarters. The key is to not dip into the funds. If you are able to start a savings account, deposit the change regularly to begin growing your savings.
Add a goal. There is evidence that people who save with a goal in mind are more successful in achieving it.
Values. Consider what is important in your life. Are there things that you value that you might save toward?
Evaluate your plan. If your timeline for saving or the amount seems out of reach, you can always adjust the timeline or amount to make it achievable.

University of Minnesota Extension has been a partner in this national effort for several years. Since 2007 America Saves Week has been an annual celebration as well as a call to action for everyday Americans to commit to saving successfully.
America Saves Week is a national campaign to focus on individual financial wellness. Over the weeklong event organizations share money-related topics and tools for individuals and families to gain clarity of their current financial situation, savings goals and plans to achieve those goals.
This year’s topics include:
- Save automatically
- Save for the unexpected
- Save to retire
- Save by reducing rebt
- Save as a family
Think about the ways that you might save. Perhaps one of the daily topics would help you to think through different ways to save. You can follow America Saves on social media throughout America Saves Week and share the goals you are saving for at
