Bogs are incredible ecosystems, with species adapted to diverse conditions. Many species found in the Sax-Zim Bog are inactive during the winter season, but the land is not empty. The Sax-Zim Bog is a habitat for many birds in the winter. This training will introduce the effect these species have on bog and forest ecology and how species survive in the winter season.
This field trip has indoor and outdoor portions, so dress accordingly. Please bring any binoculars or hand lenses that you might find useful for time out in the field. Snowshoes will be helpful during this field trip but are not required. If you wish to use snowshoes from the Welcome Center, please email [email protected] to reserve a pair.
We recommend bringing notebooks, cameras and other items that might be useful while in the field. Also, bring a lunch, a refillable water bottle (water is available for refills at the Welcome Center), and any notetaking materials you might need for the day.

Topics build on the curriculum taught in our core biome courses, but participants do not need to be Master Naturalists to take any of the advanced training courses.
