Mammal species are hard to see in the Sax-Zim Bog, but their sign is all around us.
This field trip will work to hone your skills in finding, interpreting and documenting animal tracks and sign. Do you need practice determining if you are looking at a dog or wolf track? What is the difference between the black-backed woodpecker and a pileated woodpecker sign?
This advanced training will be a general naturalist's dream, as we will cover a little bit of everything; from plants to fungi to tracks and sign to birds and more!
Plan on being outside for the length of the class and be prepared for some hiking through more unpredictable conditions. Snowshoes will be helpful during this field trip but are not required. If you wish to use snowshoes from the Welcome Center, please email Head Naturalist Clinton at naturalist@saxzim.org to reserve a pair.
Bring a lunch, a refillable water bottle (water is available for refills at the Welcome Center) and any cameras or notetaking materials you might need for the day.
Naturalists and people interested in wildlife observation.
$45
Cancellation requests received more than two weeks before the start of class are refunded minus a $10 processing fee. For cancellation requests received less than two weeks before the start of class, no refunds will be given.
University of Minnesota Extension is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs, services, and activities. To request accommodations for persons with disabilities, contact Clinton Dexter-Nienhaus, xanthomn@gmail.com, two weeks before the start of the event. Requests received after this date will be honored whenever possible.
Advanced training courses provide Master Naturalists and the public with opportunities to participate in a recreational activity and learn about a new natural resource topic. Topics build on the curriculum taught in our core biome courses, but participants do not need to be Master Naturalists in order to take any of the advanced training courses.
