Northwoods neighbors: a newcomer’s guide to land stewardship
Whether you’re curious about the tracks in your backyard, how to grow a tomato in cold, rocky soils, or the best way to manage your forest, this six-week immersive course will help you develop a relationship with the unique Cook County landscape through an ecological lens.
Each week features hands-on activities and outdoor field experiences that get you out on the land. You’ll meet local natural resource professionals, who can support your stewardship efforts long after the class ends.
Topics:
- Flora and fauna: Tree identification and coexisting with local wildlife.
- Protect the lake you love: Master practical septic care and learn how your property impacts our local water.
- Cold-climate yard and garden: Grow a thriving yard and garden in our unique soil and zone.
- Resource mapping: Connect with the local experts and tools you need to keep growing.
Class meets for 6 weeks: Tuesdays, July 14 to August 25; no class on August 11.
This course will involve outdoor time at every session, with some walking over potentially uneven terrain.
