Starry Trek: a statewide search for starry stonewort

Starry stonewort

Starry Trek is an event where volunteers search other lakes to better understand starry stonewort distribution in Minnesota.

Starry stonewort is an invasive alga that was first found in Lake Koronis in 2015 and has since spread to 11 Minnesota lakes. Learn more about starry stonewort and our research.

Volunteers get expert training on how to look for and identify starry stonewort and other aquatic invasive species. Rendezvous sites are located across the state and are hosted by local agencies and organizations to search nearby locations (see map for participating locations).

  • Training occurs on-site on the day of the event. No experience necessary!
  • Participants under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • Youth clubs (scouts, 4-H, etc.) can contact Megan Weber to learn how to participate as a club.
