4-H clover Cottonwood County 4-H Member Spotlight for October 2026 - Kallie Hovland

Place of residence: rural Heron Lake, MN

4-H member in which club: Windom Workers/Dale Diggers

Number of years in 4-H: 10, going on 11 years

Involvement with 4-H: Kallie has been involved with 4-H since she was in kindergarten. At fair, she shows beef, horse, photography, crafts and other general projects, along with participating in presentation day. In previous years, she has shown dogs, cats and other general entry projects. She has held many offices within her club and Federation.

Favorite 4-H project or program (and why): Kallie has two favorite projects since she equally loves showing beef and horse. “Both programs require a lot of work, time and patience with animals. They both help me to step out of my comfort zone by meting and interacting with new people. The relationships I have gained by being involved in both programs are greatly treasured. The program volunteers and clinicians help me to become better all the time. I’m always striving to do better than the year before.”

Advice to other 4-H youth: “My advice to other 4-H youth would be don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid to join 4-H, to take a leadership role, to try different programs or projects. Don’t worry if you make mistakes or didn’t win a blue ribbon. Getting feedback from judges will help you in the future! Talk and listen to others involved in that area. If you take one piece of advice from everyone you talk to, you will do great things!”

Why do you think people should be involved in 4-H? “I think people should be involved in 4-H because of the lasting friendships created, memories made and opportunities provided.”

Family: Kallie’s parents are Joel and Kristin. Her younger sisters are Makenna and Charlee.

Anything else you’d like to include: “Being involved in 4-H is so much fun! There is never a dull moment!”
